Driver [PSX – Beta]

Driver is a 1999 action / driving game developed by Reflections Interactive (now known as Ubisoft Reflections). In the screens and video below, you can notice an early version of the game, with various differences: in the beta the Miami city main car was yellow with a black stripe (a kind of vehicle that is only used in Driver 2), an early pause / debug menu and the car resists to more damages than in the final version.

The HUD wasn´t complete and the map color is green instead of red. Some cars seen in the beta Newcastle city were not used in the Playstation version, but they can still be “unlocked” with gameshark / AR codes. The PC version of Driver could be considered as a director´s cut since the city and the unused cars can be normally unlocked in the game.

Super Slav has made us to notice that in the beta demo you coud drive your car into the water as there are no barriers to stop you in some parts of Miami area. Also some of the boats do not have textures. Hacking the demo to have unlimited time and damage, it’s possible to roam the beta map and to found some interesting stuff! (Check the third video below) Only half of the Miami map is avalable, peds can walk on water, and the boats are not solid. The water has no effect on the civilian cars (they can drive on it like the they drive on roads), the water only affects your car. Also, the map was a bit different in the beta demo.

Also, the original beta featured screenshots and videos of a yellow Buick GSX, but this car did not feature in the final game. It was, however, included as a bonus car in Driver 2.

The Diabolical Adventures of Tobu [PSX – Cancelled]

The Diabolical Adventures of Tobu is a cancelled flight-based action game that was in development by 989 Studios for the original Playstation. As we can read in a preview from Game Pro 111 and EGM issue 109 (thanks to Celine for the scans!), the game was set in a medieval asian world, where the young winged hero, Tobu, had to rescue his uncle from the vile emperor, Nee Hithol, and his minions.

While the gameplay could have been similar to other platform / action games, the interesting part was the 360-degree freedom of flying in those stylish 3D worlds, to fight enemies, collect power ups and search for secrets and hidden areas. From what we can see in the few screenshots released, Tobu looks somehow similar to another cancelled game, Dead Phoenix for the GameCube and as the Capcom’s title, it could be compared to Kid Icarus too. Sadly the project was never finished for unknown reasons.

Unsung Heroes [PS2 – Cancelled]

Unsung Heroes was an action / adventure game that was in development at SCEA San Diego from 2002 to 2004 (formerly responsible for Mark of Kri), but the project was later cancelled when half of the team was laid off. There are almost no informations about the game, but from the few screenshots that remain, we can speculate that it was going to be some kind of super-hero game set in a sandbox world.

In 2007, developers of Sony San Diego tried to resurrect the project. Though this was all but successful, you may take a look at the video presenting a PS3 demo of the game.

Army Brats [PSX – Cancelled]

Army Brats (aka “Army Men : Arcade Blast” or “Battle Brats”) was a prototype for a new action game that was in development by 3DO in 2000 / 2001 for the original Playstation. This project was supposed to be a sequel to the ArmyMen series of games, with “kid soldiers” instead of the usual ones. The game was later cancelled, before the company was closed down in 2003. A GameBoy Color version was planned too but it had the same bad luck and it was never released. In the gallery below you can check some models that were created for the CG intro of the game.
