Sonic Mega Collection [Beta – GameCube / PS2]

As we can read on Wikipedia, Sonic Mega Collection is a sonic-games compilation for the Nintendo GameCube and Playstation 2. The compilation contains twelve to fourteen games depending on the region, all originally released on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis console. Ten of the included games are installments of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, while the remaining two to four games are only related to the series by company. Sonic CD and Sonic Drift were also planned to be included in the beta version, but the former was deferred to Sonic Gems Collection and the latter appeared in Sonic Mega Collection Plus. Below you can see is an extremely old video of Sonic Mega Collection with all the originally planned games.

Hokuto No Ken: Legend Of The Final Hero [Cancelled / Proto – PS2]

Hokuto No Ken: Legend Of The Final Hero is a cancelled game that was in development, probably for the Playstation 2, by an italian software house called Dokroton. The project started in 2006 / 2007 but sadly it was abbandoned in 2008 for copyright problems. Hokuto No ken, also known as “Fist of the North Star” is a Japanese manga series written by Buronson and drawn by Tetsuo Hara that was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1983 to 1988.

Only 2 videos of gameplay from an early prototype / alpha version of Hokuto No Ken: Legend Of The Final Hero still exists.

Star Wars: Battlefront [Beta – Xbox / PS2 / PC]

Star Wars: Battlefront is an action game developed by Pandemic Studios and LucasArts, and released on September 2004 for PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. Development for Star Wars Battlefront began at Pandemic Studios in 2002. Greg Burrod, executive producer on Battlefront stated “We wanted to create an online shooter title for the Xbox, PS2, and PC which would allow for team strategy and would feature battles and worlds from every one of the six Star Wars films.”

A beta version of Battlefront was released as an extras DVD for one of the trilogy sets. It’s quite interesting and has a lot of ideas that were not in the final version. The build date is February 03 2004, 8 months before the final version was released. Also, the HUD was different and the graphic was still unfinished.

Stranno posted a video and some comparison-screens between the beta and the final version on the Assembler Games Forum!

Cool Boarders: Sold Out [PS2 – Cancelled]

Cool Boarders: Sold Out  is a cancelled game that was in development in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, by Idol Minds. The Cool Boarders series is a snow boarding racing simulator, that was initially developed by UEP Systems for the original PlayStation in 1996. In terms of gameplay, Cool Boarders: Sold Out was probably going to be similar to the previous Cool Boarders games, but it’s a different game than the japanese-only Cool Boarders: Code Alien.  Some 3D models from the game, created by Jason Stempel, are saved below, to preserve the existence of this lost project.

Tech. Notes on the Character Models:

“Concept Artist Jason Burch provided front and side orthogonal concept sketches and it was my responsibility to match the exact likeness of the illustration style and character silhouette.”

“Each character was constructed for use during gameplay and IGCS so each had an articulated face with work, eyes, brow, mouth, jaw and hair joints and also articulated finger control.”

“Modeling and texturing of each character ranged from 3-4 days”

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks [Beta – PS2 / XBOX]

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a beat-em-up developed by Midway LA (formerly Paradox Development) and published in 2005 by Midway for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. In april 2012 a beta version of Shaolink Monk was shared online in the Assembler Games Forum, and Stranno noticed a few differences with the final version: textures, effects (water, lights) and some background changed like “the pit” level. In the E3 beta demo the moon is really shiny, in the final you can actually see the moon and there’s an UFO (?) flying around.  The final enemy in the demo is Baraka (you cannot finish it), in retail there is one ogre-boss-like generic enemy, this Baraka fight comes in the next level, the monks academy. Options menu was reworked and there’s no aspect switch.

A sequel, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks 2 (Fire & Ice) was in development for the Xbox 360, but it was soon cancelled.
