Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee [PS2 – Cancelled]

oddworldps2logo.jpg

Munch’s Oddysee was originally intended to be exclusive for the PlayStation 2, however this version was cancelled to make the game exclusively for the Xbox, taking advantage of increased graphical capabilities. However, there were many different features that didn’t make it into the final version of the game. The differences are listed below:

  • Sligs were originally able to climb ladders.
  • Abe was able to hide in the shadows like in the previous games.
  • Sligs smoked cigarettes.
  • There was a giant hamster wheel on which the Mudokons ran to power the machines in the facility.
  • Sligs were able to beat up Mudokon workers like in the previous games.
  • Abe could toss Sligs out of the window, smashing the glass, and making the Slig fall to his death from a great height.
  • The Recycler was to have an LCD screen chart for how much meat and fat there was in the chopped up character and to also show how much of it was useful.
  • Mudokon natives could grow trees by chanting.
  • Mudokon workers wielded chain-saws for chopping down trees.
  • Flying helicopters, probably similar to the Flying Sligs.
  • A scene of a few Mudokons struggling to walk in the wind. In the same video it then showed a scene with an army of marching Sligs. The marching scene was kept in the game, but as a poor quality movie. The sligs are also marching the opposite way, which can be noted in one of the levels.
  • A flying helicopter dropped a SoulStorm Brew vending machine which lands on a Mudokon. The vending machine then fired SoulStorm Brew cans at another Mudokon that knocked him out. The last can landed into the Mudokon’s mouth, forcing him to drink it.
  • Creatures called Meetles were meant to appear in this game.

ChopLifter [PS2 – Cancelled?]

“If you can remember the ChopLifter games, then well done – you have a memory. For those who don’t, they were basic 2D side scrolling affairs which saw you transporting civilians from scenes of war to safe spots. According to the press release Xiact are adding “every bell and whistle you could possibly want” to this 3D remake, which answers to the name ChopLifter: Crisis Shield. The helicopters on offer range over civilian choppers and military machines, while missions include volcano and flood scenarios and a mountain top plane crash rescue. There are ever-changing weather conditions too, including a tornado and thick snow that will no doubt hinder your visibility.” [now cancelled]

Axel Rage [PS2 – Cancelled]

“Russian developers Akella are working on Axel Rage for PlayStation 2 and PC, for the little known publisher 1C Company. The game stars Duke Nuke’em lookalike Axle, a respected member of the ‘No Dice’ motorbike gang. Trouble is brewing in Nailsdale – a post-apocalyptic city built on an artificial coastal sea platform – and so it’s Axel’s job to sort things out. Because he’s hard and stuff. Viewed from a third person perspective, the developers promise a highly interactive experience. Nearly everything can be used as a weapon and items such as bottles and furniture can be broken for fun. Combat on the other hand comes in three flavours – armed, unarmed and astride your motobike, Road Rash style. The graphics engine is being supplied by RenderWare, so you can bet your bottom Nailsdale dollar that it’ll look the part, even if the game’s title is a cheesy one. It’ll be out next year somewhen.” [now cancelled]

Tiny Toon Adventures: Defenders of the Looniverse [PS2 – Cancelled]

Tiny Toon Adventures: DotL is the name of Tiny Toon Adventures video game that seems to have been cancelled. Originally developed by Treasure Video Games, it was originally slated for the PlayStation 2 and possibly the Nintendo GameCube. It was originally slated for release in May of 2001, but thanks to many delays, the game no longer has a foreseeable future.Other possible titles for the game included Tiny Toon Adventures: Defenders of the Loony-verse, Tiny Toon Adventures: Defenders of the Universe, and Tiny Toon Adventures: ACME Invasions. None of them were confirmed, however.

The game’s original official website, www.dotu.net, no longer exists. Tetsuhiko Kikuchi (aka Han), the apparent director of the game, his hinted on his homepage(Japanese) that the game has indeed been cancelled. An article on IGN written back in 2004 suggested that the game has always been intended for release. The article says at the end “Still officially slated to come out sometime (not necessarily in 2004)”, but 2005 has even come and gone with nothing new about this game released. The main page at IGN now has cancelled for the US release date. Defenders of the Looniverse was of the most interest to Treasure fans because it was based of the gameplay that was originally in Rakugaki Showtime. The gameplay had been greatly expanded over Rakugaki and the most obvious additions included large, interactive levels and a new scenario mode that allowed for 4 player co-operative play and giant bosses.” [wikipedia]

In february 2009, a beta of Tiny Toon Adventure was leaked online, thanks to linlhutz from the Lost Levels Forum,  and it can now be played and preserved! Huge props to him! You can read the original topic at the LLForum and download the leaked Tiny Toon Adventures beta in here or here (Thanks to X-Cult for the mirror). If you are not able to play this one, you can look at a series of  videos (with some framerate issues because of the emu) thanks to ChibiTeinko, check his Youtube Channel.
