Fear & Respect [Cancelled]

Fear & Respect was a video game for the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, and the Xbox 360 consoles that has been cancelled, although intended for a 2006 release. John Singleton was involved in the production of the game. He has directed movies (Boyz N the Hood, Baby Boy and 2 Fast 2 Furious) and has been involved with other video games in the past.

The game featured Snoop Dogg (who plays Goldie) and other characters. The player played in a third person mode. The objective of the game is to fight to gain respect of rival gangs in South Central Los Angeles. If the player gains a gang’s respect, then they will treat you differently than if they fear you.

At the time of announcement, there were very few details released about the game. However, one trailer and thirteen screenshots have been made available by Midway.

Although the game was intended for a 2006 release, however, as of March 1, 2006, Fear and Respect has been officially cancelled, as reported by GameSpot. It was believed that the game has been cancelled because of growing competition within the urban-themed video games market. The game is the earliest cancelled game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

2 Days To Vegas [Concept / Tech Demo]

Development of the game began in 2003 at the now defunct Glasgow studios of Steel Monkeys. When Steel Monkeys in the UK shut down the game moved production to the secondary Steel Monkeys studio established in Minsk, Belarus. The game received much attention when screenshots were released, the quality of the game’s graphics amazed many video game players. At the 2007 GDC, Steel Monkeys showed off new screenshots of the game which the Steel Monkeys’s boss assured was real-time and not pre-rendered. However the screenshots were not actually ingame, but just concept pre-renders.

Time Shift [Beta – Xbox 360 – PS3]

TimeShift was originally going to be published by Atari, but publishing rights switched to Sierra on April 20, 2006. On August 31, 2006, TimeShift was delayed for a second time. The game was finally released on October 30, 2007.

Because the game had been delayed several times and was not mentioned very much in gaming news, the press thought that the project had been abandoned. However, on April 10, 2007, Vivendi Games announced that they were giving TimeShift a complete overhaul and were fixing many bugs. The most striking beta difference is the change in visual style, after claims that the original look “couldn’t compete in the post Unreal Engine 3 world” and that the original steampunk style “didn’t resonate with people.”

One of a number of beta changes is that Michael Swift, the game’s original protagonist, will not be appearing in the game. After the retooling of the game, Saber introduced “the suit” as the time control device, making the protagonist anonymous. Saber said that this change was to let the player imagine that “you are the protagonist”. [info from Wikipedia]

Some more differences were noticed by Vicente:

  • an intro with michael talking to someone
  • a in game scene of a vehicle blowing up by a rocket
  • different graphics
  • different HUD
  • there was an early box, it was blue, with michael with a gun.

Possession [X360/PS3 – Cancelled?]

While not officially cancelled, the game has received no updates for a year. In response to several questions about Possession, Blitz/Volatile has sent out the same message to any person who requested the status of the game.

“Hi there, Thanks for your interest in Possession. Unfortunately we still haven’t managed to secure a publisher to take on the project. We haven’t given up on Possession completely, we want to see it made as much as you do. We are pursuing other games at the moment though. Best regards, PR Dept, Volatile Games”

The nature of the email and its content, especially the “pursuing other games” comment seem to suggest that the game will not be completed. It is still noted though that no Publisher yet is found and that they didn’t give up Possession completely indicating that the game is not yet cancelled and it has a chance that once a Publisher takes the project, the game would be continued to be completed. – [info from Wikipedia]
