Project Dagger was an internal prototype for a new cooperative action game developed at Digital Illusions (DICE) during 2004/2005. When EA bought the studio, they did not greenlight the title for full production. From the look of the few videos preserved (that are probably target renders), the game was going to be about robbing bank and other criminal affairs, using 4 characters with different abilities. It seems that they wanted to have an online coop mode too.
Mirror’s Edge is a first person platformer video game developed by DICE (EA Digital Illusions CE) and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November 2008. [Info from Wikipedia] Before working on the real game, DICE tested the first person movement with a target render / prototype video, using canned animation as a target of how it would feel in the final game.
At this stage Faith was a male and it still had a gun. DICE held a presentation of the game at GDC09 and shared a proof of concept video with the fans as a “documentary” of the development of the project. As mentioned in the bonus section of the game, a prison level was cut from Mirrors Edge for unknown reasons. Some early concept arts of the characters can also be unlocked in the bonus section.
In autumn 2008, DICE’s Mirror’s Edge was released on the Xbox 360, PC and PS3. However, EA wanted to expand on this concept and asked Backbone Entertainment to produce a small demo of the game for the Wii. A portable version of the game was pitched for the PSP and DS too.
Currently it’s still unknown whether a Mirror’s Edge game will ever be released on platforms other than PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
This little-known game appears as a ‘work-in-progress’ in the September 1994 issue of Sega Power, it was developed by DICE (originally for the Amiga) but it doesn’t have a decent description. According to the article, Hardcore was a typical run-and-gun platformer, similar to the Turrican series or Super Star Wars, with many different enemies to destroy. The press release for the game boasted that ‘you are able to shoot almost everything, even if it’s not necessary’. There was also a Mega-CD version to be released, which was to include a driving segment at the end of each level, similar to Batman Returns. Although planned for a November 1994 release, both versions of the game were seemingly cancelled.
Little else is said about the game in the article, which is a common trend for previews in Sega Power… They seem to have spent far more time writing the amusing captions, which you can see in the article scan.
It seems that the original Amiga version of Hardcore only got half-finished. Then they decided to do it on Megadrive instead; the MD cartridge version was 99% finished (just a bug or two in the game logic, and highscores aren’t saved) when Psygnosis decided not to publish it. The MD-CD version did not get very far in development.
