Lucifer [PC – Cancelled]

Lucifer (aka Farralin) is a cancelled a Action RPG with a gameplay similar to Diablo, that was in development in 1998 by Eclipse Entertainment as a collaboration with Electronic Arts Canada. The game was being prototyped in the Genesis 3D engine and the design called for randomly-generated dungeons featuring mini-bosses, permutation driven monsters, a deep item reward system and networked multiplay. Lucifer featured an ambitious design and state of the art (for the time) graphics, that could have made it to rival to games like Diablo II and Dungeon Siege.

Eclipse Entertainment created a small demo in a couple of weeks and EA was really impressed by their work, but ultimately the studio and the publisher were unable to come to deal terms that were mutually agreeable, so the game never moved beyond an early protoype and pre-production phase. After releasing a couple of golf games (Jack Nicklaus 5 and 6)  Eclipse Entertainment was closed down and Lucifer vanished forever with them.

Fate / Extra [PSP – Beta]

As we can read on Wikipedia, Fate/Extra is a Japanese dungeon RPG developed by Type-Moon and Image Epoch, published by Marvelous Entertainment for the PSP in July 2010. The game takes place in a parallel universe to the visual novel Fate/stay night. The game’s battle system is comparable to rock-paper-scissors — “Attack” overpowers “Break”, Break overpowers “Guard”, and Guard overpowers Attack. During battle, both the player and the opponent line up six such moves at the beginning of each turn.

Fallout: New Vegas [X360 PS3 PC – Beta/Cut/Debug + DLC]

Fallout: New Vegas is an action FPS/RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Before the game was released changes were made to the game near the end of development. Most of what is documented below can be found in promotional screenshots, videos, and developer diaries.

During initial development, Fallout 3 super mutants appeared in the game as placeholders. Possibly until the New Vegas super mutant variant was created. For example; Neil – a friendly super mutant you meet at Black Mountain – originally appeared as a Fallout 3 super mutant in the beta. You can compare what Neil looked like in the beta to what he looks like in the final below this paragraph.

Another character that was changed in New Vegas is Mr. House. Mr. House uses a master computer to communicate to the player in the Lucky 38 casino. At the time, Mr. House appeared different on the computer screen in the video: developer diary #4 – factions.

The final character that was changed in New Vegas is Sunny Smiles. Sunny wears the same armor in the final like she does in the beta, however her appearance in the game changed somewhat. 

Fantasy Life [DS – Cancelled / Beta]

Fantasy Life is a quest-based RPG / adventure game that was developed by Level-5 and Brownie Brown. It was released on Nintendo 3DS in Japan on December 27, 2012, and then later in 2014 in Western territories. However, the game was was first planned to be released on the Nintendo DS; a version, which was later cancelled.

When it began life on DS, the game had a 2D visual style, similar to the one seen in Mother 3. It was first announced at Level-5 Vision 2009 on August 25, 2009, during which time it was being targeted for a 2010 release. The developers presented the first early screenshots of the game at the event, as well as a selection of concept art assets:

Level-5, however, made the call put the project on hold, before resuming development for the 3DS, due to sales forecasts. When it resurfaced on its new platform in October 2010, it was revealed that the game had underwent a big change in art direction. The 2D art of the DS version was done away with, and it had been rebuilt in a 3D engine.

Hyouryuu Shounen Keith [GB – Cancelled]

Hyouryuu Shounen Keith (Castaway Boy Keith) is a cancelled action RPG that was in development in 1990 by Epic / Sony for the original GameBoy. The project looked a lot like Zelda: Link’s Awakening, but Keith was in the works 3 years before Nintendo’s title. The game’s plot was also similar to Link’s Awakening, as Keith sank on a small island called Harrods Is, where he had to  complete dungeons and find musical notes to defeat the final boss.
