Nichimen Graphics Beat ‘em Up [N64 PSX SAT - Tech Demo]

At E3 1996, Nichimen Graphics shown a tech demo with a beat ‘em up for the Nintendo 64, Saturn and Playstation. As we can read in an old press release, their N-World 3 engine included N-Geometry (polygonal modeler), N-Dynamics (scripting), Skeletal Animation System (motion capture editing tools and animation tools, plus skeletal posing using both IK and traditional methods), N-Render (photorealistic ray tracing renderer), N-Paint & N-Paint 3D (2D and 3D paint systems) and Game Express (for artists to preview data directly on a 3D game platform). Currently we dont know if this engine was ever used for a realeased beat ‘em up / fighting game.

In one of the photos published in Edge magazine from June 1996 you can notice that over the TV with the N64 tech demo, there was also a Ultra 64 prototype pad.

This tech demo created by Sony was shown in one of the early announcements of the “new” playstation hardware, to demonstrate the 3D graphic capacities of their 32 bit console. While today the graphic of this “fighting demo” looks simple, it was probably a great achievement in 1994. Celine was able to find the screenshots below in Edge #11 and PlayerOne magazine # 44.

Update: the Magazine says Ultra 64 but those captures are from Super Off Road: The Baja for Super Nintendo from Software Creations

Williams Entertainment was one of the first third-party to show support for Nintendo 64 even before the console had that final name and specifications. In fact they showed at E3 ’95 two tech demo, one was No Fear Racing while the other was an off road racing game tentatively called Off Road. It’s very likely that this early demo was the base for the N64 racer Off Road Challenge.

A simple tech demo that shows a football playfield was found by MegaMoto85 on a green Xbox Devkit. You can change between different textures and test the phisic for the balls. Check the video below to see it in motion!

The PC-FXGA is a computer add-on card that can be plugged into a NEC PC-9800 or a computer with ISA slot. Along with the included software, the PC-FXGA acts as a development kit for the PC-FX.

GB Rally 2 Advance [GBA - Cancelled]

GB Rally 2 Advance is a cancelled racing game that was in development by Raylight Studios for the GameBoy Advance. Only an early demo without sound was created, thanks to their Blue Roses Engine for GBA. It’s curious that despite the 2 in the title, there wasn’t actually a GB Rally 1 available commercially because it went unreleased on the GameBoy Color. Same fate shared by the sequel.

Marionette [GameCube - Cancelled]

Marionette is a mysterious cancelled project that was in development for the Gamecube. At E3 2001, Nintendo accidentaly announced on its online release list three mysterious titles: Super Mario Sunshine, Mario 128, and Marionette. This list was pulled shortly after it was published, but the curiosity of gamers piqued.

Later, during an interview with IGN, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke out on these games in a roundtable (August, 2001)

“And as for Marionette, it is still under development. It is not a Mario game, but an actual Marionette game utilizing a puppet. I am hoping to make something both complicated and simple at the same time [with this game], which is kind of a contradiction. But already we are experimenting. And once again, sometime in the future we may be able to show you something on it.”

The game was toyed around with in concept stages (on both N64 and GameCube), but it was never actually developed in full form. As we can read in another IGN article:

“Marionette is probably more suited for something like the Wii,” said Miyamoto. “However, that type of game is difficult. Just looking at it, it seems to be fun, but then you get the feeling of, ‘Well, what do I do now?’.” Miyamoto feels that in order to make such a game last, you have to give it, among other things, a strong story.

Nintendo Dream noted that the title would be perfect for the Wii, as manipulating a marionette would be enjoyable with the Wii remote. The magazine also pointed out that the Japanese spelling of the name breaks down perfectly to “Mario” and “Net,” suggesting network features. Still, Miyamoto had some partially disappointing news. “We’re not working on it any more. However, we’d like to release something like it with the right timing, so we’re preserving it in the form of its story elements. When Marionette was being planned, we were trying to use the N64 controller in interesting ways. However, if we now use the Wii remote controller, it seems that those types of interesting elements would appear more naturally.”

Sadly Nintendo never released any image from this cancelled project.

Butcher [Xbox 360 - Prototype]

The Butcher was one of many character prototypes created by Rare Ltd. in 2008. When the company’s direction shifted to Kinect software, all work on this prototype was abandoned. Currently we don’t know what kind of game Rare planned to use the Butcher into, or even if it would ever be used in some commercial project. As far as we know, this could have been a character study, without any gameplay connected at all. Only a few images and animations remain, to preserve the existence of this project.

Full Metal Alchemist [PSP - Tech Demo]

In 2006 Torus Games worked on a small PSP tech demo for a game based on the Full Metal Alchemist manga / anime, probably to pitch a full project. FMA is an ongoing Japanese series, set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques. In 2006 Funimation licensed the franchise to create a new series of Fullmetal Alchemist related video games to be published by Destineer Publishing in the United States. [Info from Wikipedia]

It’s possible that Torus’ tech demo was shown to Destineer, but for some reasons it never evolved into a real game.  A FMA game for the PlayStation Portable titled “Fullmetal Alchemist: Senka wo Takuseshi Mono” was later developed by Namco Bandai and released in Japan on October 2009.

F-1 [PSX - Tech Demo]

Before the Playstation was released, Sony’s Epic team (Epic Sony Record?) created a tech demo with F-1 cars racing in a city street, to show some of the graphic power of their new 32 Bit console. Today this graphic could look silly, but for it’s time it was really nice. In the end, Epic never developed any real game for the Playstation. Celine was able to find a screenshot of this tech demo in Edge issue 5.
