Dreams To Reality [PSX/PC – Beta]

Dreams: to Reality is an action game developed by Cryo Interactive and released in 1997 for the PC and Playstation. In the screens below you can see an early beta version of the game, but as we never played the final one, we are not sure about all the differences. If you played the game, please let us know if you find some interesting changes!

Into The Shadows [PC/Saturn – Cancelled]

“Into The Shadows” was a fighting game (not RPG as a lot of people believe) in development by Triton, an ex demo group from Sweden, active on the PC demo scene in the early-to-mid 1990s. Triton were previously known for the popular demo “Crystal Dream 2”, as well as the FastTracker / FastTracker II music editing applications. The game was to be published by Scavenger, who were also made up of many ex demo team developers.

The non-interactive demo shown in the video clip, was released in 1995, and the engine was considered superior to the Quake engine – showing realtime shadows, and aimed at running well on lower spec hardware (486 processor, compared to Quake requiring a Pentium to run at a playable speed).

Unfortunately, the game was cancelled around late 1997 / early 1998, when Scavenger went bankrupt.

In 1998, some members of Triton formed Starbreeze Studios, who merged with O3 Games in 2000. They later went on to create games such as “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay” and “The Darkness”.

Gun Beat [DC/Arcade – Cancelled]

GunBeat (also known as Glitter GunBeat) was an action/racing game created by Treasure for the Sega NAOMI arcade hardware in 1999. It was location-tested publicly, but canceled before its release. A few videos and images remain the only reliable sources of information about the game.

The game, which would have been Treasure’s first fully 3D title, appeared to have players race each other around circuitous tracks riding mounts, including a giant hamster. The game had action and combat elements, as well.

Production was terminated when the lead programmer left the company. This programmer has not been identified by name, but founding member “Fukuryu” is known to have left the company around this same time, and remains the best guess of fans. Treasure was not initially pleased with game’s progress and chose to end the project rather than attempt to replace the project leader. [Infos from Wikipedia]

Ghouls & Ghosts Online [Proto / Cancelled]

Ghouls & Ghosts Online was planned to be a MMO of CAPCOM’s cult classic Ghouls ‘N Goblins with platforming challenges and hordes of monsters to battle as well as community features like guilds. This project was announced at GDC in 2003 but the ambitious multiplatform MMO never saw the light of day.

Sim Mars [PC – Unreleased]

SimMars was a strategy game in development at Maxis around the same time as the release of the wildly popular Maxis game, The Sims. A trailer for the game was included on the SimCity 3000 CD. From the trailer, the premise of the game seemed to be a manned mission to the planet Mars, followed by a terraforming and colonization scenario, typical of the Maxis world-building game style. The game presumed to be an integration of previous Maxis titles presented in 3D, possibly including elements of SimEarth, SimLife, and SimCity.

In The Sims: Vacation, there was an arcade game titled SimMars and it had a detailed description about the game. This may or may not have been the real premise of the game:

“Direct mankind’s first mission to the red planet! Launch rockets and deploy robot probes! Deploy teams to search for alien resources! Establish and run a network of specialized colonies to create a self-sufficient civilization! Provide your colony with food, shelter, and power! Fast, furious, adrenaline-pumping action!”

As of May 12, 2000, Maxis has stated that “SimMars is on hold and we do not have staff at Maxis currently working on the game. With the phenomenal success of The Sims, we’ve decided to move resources to support that franchise as well as other titles that we haven’t even announced yet.”
