Fear & Respect [Cancelled]

Fear & Respect was a video game for the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, and the Xbox 360 consoles that has been cancelled, although intended for a 2006 release. John Singleton was involved in the production of the game. He has directed movies (Boyz N the Hood, Baby Boy and 2 Fast 2 Furious) and has been involved with other video games in the past.

The game featured Snoop Dogg (who plays Goldie) and other characters. The player played in a third person mode. The objective of the game is to fight to gain respect of rival gangs in South Central Los Angeles. If the player gains a gang’s respect, then they will treat you differently than if they fear you.

At the time of announcement, there were very few details released about the game. However, one trailer and thirteen screenshots have been made available by Midway.

Although the game was intended for a 2006 release, however, as of March 1, 2006, Fear and Respect has been officially cancelled, as reported by GameSpot. It was believed that the game has been cancelled because of growing competition within the urban-themed video games market. The game is the earliest cancelled game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

2 Days To Vegas [Concept / Tech Demo]

Development of the game began in 2003 at the now defunct Glasgow studios of Steel Monkeys. When Steel Monkeys in the UK shut down the game moved production to the secondary Steel Monkeys studio established in Minsk, Belarus. The game received much attention when screenshots were released, the quality of the game’s graphics amazed many video game players. At the 2007 GDC, Steel Monkeys showed off new screenshots of the game which the Steel Monkeys’s boss assured was real-time and not pre-rendered. However the screenshots were not actually ingame, but just concept pre-renders.

Possession [X360/PS3 – Cancelled?]

While not officially cancelled, the game has received no updates for a year. In response to several questions about Possession, Blitz/Volatile has sent out the same message to any person who requested the status of the game.

“Hi there, Thanks for your interest in Possession. Unfortunately we still haven’t managed to secure a publisher to take on the project. We haven’t given up on Possession completely, we want to see it made as much as you do. We are pursuing other games at the moment though. Best regards, PR Dept, Volatile Games”

The nature of the email and its content, especially the “pursuing other games” comment seem to suggest that the game will not be completed. It is still noted though that no Publisher yet is found and that they didn’t give up Possession completely indicating that the game is not yet cancelled and it has a chance that once a Publisher takes the project, the game would be continued to be completed. – [info from Wikipedia]

Dark Sector [Proto / Beta]

Dark Sector is a Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 game currently under production by Digital Extremes. Numerous tech demos featuring the game’s engine, the “Sector Engine”, have been released by Digital Extremes. An in-game cinematic has also been publicly released, giving viewers a brief look at potential storyline and environments, as well as the graphics of the game.

Dark Sector was originally intended to take place in a science-fiction environment, notably in outer space, with players taking the role of a player character with the ability to make and throw glaives, as well as inhabiting a sleek mechanical suit.

In 2006, major overhauls to the game were revealed, showing a completely different looking main character, and a noticeable less sci-fi setting. The developers (according to the November 2006 Game Informer issue) cited a shift in focus by other gaming companies as the reason for the change to a more modern setting and reducing its sci-fi elements. An interview with GameSpot has also revealed that the change in setting is intended to make the main character stand out more, as well as making the story more relatable. – [info from Wikipedia]
