Disney’s Atlantis [PS2 – Prototype]

Atlantis is a prototype for a game based on the Disney film of the same name, that was created by Ubisoft Canada in 2000 / 2001. As we can read on Wikipedia, the movie begins with a reenactment of the sinking of the legendary city of Atlantis, but the main story begins thousands of years later in 1914, when Milo James Thatch, an aspiring young cartographer/linguist/explorer, believes he has found the secret to the location of Atlantis.

While some Atlantis games were released for the GBA, PSX and PC, a PS2 version was never published. It seems that Ubisoft tried to pitch their  demo to Disney, but for some reasons they decided to not give the permission to use the Atlantis license for a Playstation 2 project.

Siren: Special Edition [PS2 – Unreleased]

Siren is a survival horror released by Sony for PS2 in 2004. A special edition of the game was supposed to be released on 7th October of the same year, but it was suddenly canceled, probably due to the first version’s poor sales.

The special edition would have featured:

  • An easy mode
  • An new hint system that could be consulted before playing a level
  • An extra mode where a challenge was added in each level, such as playing with invisible or faster enemies, without the sight-jack,  using only the first-person view, time trials which had to be completed without being seen, and so on.
  • Complete profiles of all characters
  • A making-of documentary
  • An interview with the producer
  • A video about the event that was added in the western release.

It seems that Toyama was having fun playing the game as himself . Of course, this polygonal model was not used in the final version. More interestingly, we can see a mysterious text that says “over seventy characters” in the screenshot. It is unlikely that there were going to be so many characters in the game, but we don’t have any official explanation about this writing.

Lost D Project [XBOX/PS2 – Concept]

After the development of Cold Fear, Darkworks evaluated many other games concepts to pitch for their new project, but most of them were never realized. There are not many info about all these ideas, but one of their “lost projects” had a nice sci-fi-noir / steam-punk style, as we can see from the few concept arts preserved. The main character seems to have been an “agent with a grey coat, that reminds me of Rick Deckard in Blade Runner. In the dark and steamy city, various demons, psycho-soldiers and huge monsters were going to be the main enemies of the player. It’s currently unknown if this concept was ever developed in a playable form, or it just remained an awesome series of drawings.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance [PS2/XBOX/GC – Beta]

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, originally known as Mortal Kombat 5: Vengeance, is a fighting game developed and produced by Midway. The game was released for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube in 2002. Deadly Alliance was the first all-new Mortal Kombat fighting game produced exclusively for home consoles, with no preceding arcade release. [Info from Wikipedia]

At the Mortal Kombat Secrets website we can read many interesting info about the development of the game and its beta differences. Various characters were created for Mortal Kombat 5, but some of them were never used in the final game, as Kai, Dairou, Tiamat, Hachiman, Baphomet, The Evil Masters and Siobhan.

Also, some playable characters in Deadly Alliance went through a lot of changes before their final design, as Shang Tsung, Quan Chi (with a living weapon that never made it in to the game), Scorpion, Li Mei, Mavado and Frost. Early screens of the game are probably just target renders, as the graphic is nothing like the one in the final game. A Water Temple arena was  also planned, but removed from the final version.

The Ace Of Spade [PS2 – Cancelled]

The Ace of Spade is a cancelled action game that was in development by Ubisoft in 2004, for the Playstation 2. The team created an early playable prototype that was probably used for an internal pitch, but in the end the project was never finished for unknown reasons. The game had a cover/fire system similar to the one used in Namco’s Kill Switch and later in Gear of Wars.
