Red Baron [N64 – Cancelled]

redbaron64logo.jpg

Red Baron 64 is a cancelled Nintendo 64 World War I fighter aircraft game that was in development by Sierra: the project was going to be a “remake” of the original Red Baron game that was released on PC in 1990, originally developed by Dynamix. The few screenshots available could have been taken from the PC version and we can only wonder if Sierra really started to work on the N64 version or it was just announced as an idea but then never worked on.

ChopLifter [PS2 – Cancelled?]

“If you can remember the ChopLifter games, then well done – you have a memory. For those who don’t, they were basic 2D side scrolling affairs which saw you transporting civilians from scenes of war to safe spots. According to the press release Xiact are adding “every bell and whistle you could possibly want” to this 3D remake, which answers to the name ChopLifter: Crisis Shield. The helicopters on offer range over civilian choppers and military machines, while missions include volcano and flood scenarios and a mountain top plane crash rescue. There are ever-changing weather conditions too, including a tornado and thick snow that will no doubt hinder your visibility.” [now cancelled]

Dragonfly (Pilot Wings) [Beta – SNES]

From 1989 to 1990, the Super Famicom (SNES) was showcased with a series of game prototypes. One of these was a flight simulator known as Dragonfly. Dragonfly’s purpose was to showcase the capabilities of the console’s Mode-7 technology. Eventually Dragonfly became the fully released game known as Pilotwings, developed by Nintendo EAD.

Initially, Dragonfly was a 3-dimensional shooter in which the player controlled a dragonfly capable of shooting various objects. This version was visually different from Pilotwings, but utilized the same basis of being a Mode-7 flying game.

In later presentations to showcase the Super Famicom, Dragonfly made appearances, but its theme was changed from a 3-dimensional shooter to a flight simulator. Still called “Dragonfly” at the time, this beta demo was much closer to what eventually became Pilotwings.
