Pandemonium [PSX / Saturn / PC]

Pandemonium is a 2.5D side scrolling platform game, developed by Toys For Bob and published by Crystal Dynamics, originally for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. Celine has found some beta screenshots (20% complete?) of the game in GamePro #83 in which we can notice the early graphic and some possible other differences (sadly i don’t remember the game that well, if you find more changes, please let us know!).

It’s interesting to notice that Pandemonium was released in Japan by Bandai under the title Magical Hoppers, with story, cutscenes and characters completely changed with a more “japanese” style. [Info from Wikipedia]

Alpha Stage – July 1996
Platform: PSX

This version contains some rather interesting differences. You can switch the characters whilst in-game unlike the final verison which doesn’t allow this. Most of the levels are there but they appear to be incomplete towards the end. The world map/level selection is also incomplete and very basic. The HUD is different from the final game and so are the collectibles which seem to be red gems of some sort.

August/Early September 1996 Beta Trailer

A trailer which shows footage of an unknown build of the game. My estimate is between August/Early September 1996. There are numerous differences, especially the HUD which has a picture of the character itself. I actually prefer it like this.

Midland [PSX/Saturn – Cancelled?]

Saga Darvulia has found an old magazine with an article about a misterious action RPG called “Midland”, that was in development by “Future Soft” (??) sometime in 1996. From the look of the only screen available, the game should have probably been for the Playstation or Saturn. There are basically no other info on this project, so we can assume that it was cancelled, but it could also be possible that it was relased under a different name in Japan. If someone recognize this game, please let us know!

MagBall [PSX – Cancelled]

MagBall is a cancelled Playstation game that was in development by Trimark Interactive in 1995. The gameplay was going to be somewhat similar to a soccer game, but with spaceships that have to knock a ball into a goal. The project was never released for unknow reasons and few year later, Trimark was closed down. Celine was able to find some screens from the game in EGM issue 74, even if the images were probably taken from a FMV or a target render and no real gameplay was shown.

Manhattan Project (Blood Lines) [PSX – Beta]

Manhattan Project is the early working title of Blood Lines, an action / puzzle game developed by Radical Entertainment in 1998, for the original Playstation. In the game the player needs to touch the light sources that are placed in the levels, to change them in his own color. At the end of the time, the player that owns more lights wins the match.

From these early screens we can notice that the characters in the beta version were different and even the light effects are not like the final ones.

Silent Chaos (Dark Earth 2) [Playstation – Cancelled]

Silent Chaos is a cancelled action adventure that was in development by Kalisto Entertainment from 1997 to 1999. The game was going to be published on the  Playstation by Squaresoft, but originally the project started as a sequel of Dark Earth, an action adventure created by the same team and released only on PC. After few months of work on Dark Earth 2, Kalisto stopped the development for the PC, but it seems that Squaresoft was interested in the game and they changed DE2 into a new IP for the PSX.

The character designs that were initially created at Kalisto were redone again by Tetsuya Nomura, one of the main character designers at Square, famous for his works on Final Fantasy 7, Parasite Eve, The Bouncer and many more. Sadly, after a couple of years of development, Silent Chaos was canned, probably because of the shift of development on the soon to be released Playstation 2. A new Dark Earth 2 project was later proposed for the PS2, but nothing came from it. Kalisto Entertainment declared bankruptcy in 2002: Dark Earth 2 / Silent Chaos vanished forever with the studio and only few CG models and backgrounds remain.
