Super Mario Strikers 2 [Beta / Concept – Wii]

Super Mario Strikers Charged (also known as Mario Strikers Charged Football in European and Australian territories) was released on the Nintendo Wii in 2007 and created by Next Level Games in partnership with Nintendo. It is the sequel to Super Mario Strikers on the Gamecube.

Before it gained the subtitle ‘Charged’ later in development (a reference to the game’s ‘skillshot’ charging mechanic), the game was initially going under the simple title of ‘Super Mario Strikers 2‘. The original title was scrapped before its first public showing at the “Wii Prove Our Promise” keynote in August 2006.

More art from early on in development on the game has been found by Unseen64, which offers insight into some of the smaller concepts played around with towards the start of the project.

At one stage, ‘ball launchers‘ were considered as an aesthetic addition to levels. These were machines that would have propelled multiple balls up towards characters during mega strikes. In the final game, these were dropped and only one ball model is shown when a player is able to activate one. Any additional balls earned during the attack’s initiation aren’t shown to the player (up to 6 can be gained at a time); this is a process which happens off screen. These small mechanisms weren’t implemented into the game, as they were viewed as an unnecessary detail that would have needlessly extended the animation sequence.

Another visual idea that the artists at Next Level experimented with towards the start of development were mechs and other vehicles, which would have decorated the perimeter of certain stages during gameplay. In most of the concept art, these are commonly seen operated by Toads. They would have been dotted around the sides of pitches, acting as security guards and performing other miscellaneous tasks. One concept, for instance, sees one of the Toads operating a crane-like contraption and another in a large digger.

Pokemon Battle Revolution [Beta – Wii]

Pokemon Battle Revolution was first announced by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata at a Nintendo marketing event in Japan on June 2006 and it was released in 2007 after Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Below you can see the original trailer that contains a lot of beta stuff: it seems that it still used the same engine from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (GameCube) and there are some unused / early 3d models.

Video:

As you can see in the middle the HUD is the same from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness and battles are from Pokemon Red and Green.. maybe they even planned a connection with the gameboy advance games. Rumors say that Pokemon Battle Revolution originaly was started in 2006 after Gale of Darkness was finished, but it was later postponed to be a title for the new console.

Zelda: Skyward Sword [Beta / Unused Models – Wii]

As we can read on Wikipedia, the development of  The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword started between the production cycles of the two The Legend of Zelda games for the Nintendo DS. While the implementation of the graphics was not advanced enough to present actual footage at the E3 2009 trade show, the story of the game was almost completed, and a single piece of concept art was revealed to a select group of journalists.[28] The image was released to the public a few days later, and showed a near-adult Link with a shield in his left hand, a mysterious female figure standing at his back.

As the game was shown to the public in late-development, there are just a few screens and videos with beta elements, but hidden in the final game’s code there are still some beta and unused models.

  • there is one Map called “DEMO” which is simple a Square with two textures
  • an older version of that temple you go into at the beginning of the game (StageF402Bef and StageF402Bef _s)
  • There was no shield-meter in the beta
  • Karane has animations for when she’s being blown by the Gust Bellows. You can’t use items indoors, and she’s only outdoors before you obtain that item.

These red Chuchus are not in the game or area. The normal Chuchus that burn your shield are orange. This one is a dark red.

zelda skyward sword beta demo

Even though this was only a Demo area, it’s still an area that was never in the game that wasn’t used. Most of the demo areas were used except this one.

An old version of the map from Skyward Sword that never appeared.

Skyview Temple use to be called ‘Sky Temple’.

An unchanged beta loftwing inside the game, during the begining cutscenes, you will be able to see it for a few seconds.

Spyro’s Kingdom [Cancelled – PS3 / Xbox 360 / Wii]

Spyro’s Kingdom is a cancelled game in the Spyro Series, which was developed, then scrapped, then redeveloped, then scrapped, but became Skylanders. Version 1 was developed by Helios Interactive and was to be exclusive to PC and Nintendo Wii. This version got cancelled, however, it was revived later by Toys 4 Bob with version 2, which introduced the portal of power and skylander figures, then called “Kingdom Heros”. Later it was redone again and finally released as Skylanders.

VERSION 1- Helios Version
The game was presented to
Activision, complete with working demo and production art. However, Activision decided against this game, and instead went on to create Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, the third reboot in the Spyro franchise. It is unknown if the game was cancelled before or after the cancellation of the Spyro movie, which was also set in the ‘Legend’ reboot.

Something interesting to note is that the flying mechanic is very similar to that used in Skylanders – It is unknown if this was on purpose or not.

Version 2 -Toys 4 Bob Version
This version is highly similar to Skylanders, even including portals and figures, however, this version did not require the figures or portal to play, and it had online play. Activision liked the concept and decided to go with it, later they had Toys 4 Bob remove the online play and make the figures and portal required. The version 2 was going to be Nintendo Wii Exclusive. However when word of this got out to fans, there was backlash and the fans on several forums expressed hate and did death threats. Later they announced it would also launch on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as well.

Jackal [Wii – Prototype]

In 2009, images about an undisclosed project for Wii appeared on 3d artist Eric Testroete’ site. The pictures resemble very closely a 3d rendition of Konami old military game Jackal released in 1986 in the arcades. In light of Konami revival of its older franchises on Wii under the Rebirth brand-name ( Contra, Castlevania, Gradius ) a new Jackal could have been in the card. Too bad it seems the project never went further than that working prototype.
