Game Boy (+ Color)

San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing [GBC – Cancelled]

Announced in 1998, around the time of the Game Boy Color unveiling this cancelled conversion of San Francisco Rush looks quite excellent from the only image in our possession. Sadly this racing game was never released and the port for the little handheld of the  following episode, San Francisco Rush 2049, looked totally different and with a more conventional top-down perspective.

Gekido [GameBoy Color – Cancelled?]

Gekido is a series of beat ’em up created by Naps Team, released on the Playstation and GameBoy Advance. A GameBoy Color version of Gekido was developed too, but the only proof of its existence is an old page on the official Naps team website and some lines in wikipedia. There are no cartdidges on Ebay, no ROM floating around the web, no review available, almost no screenshots… we can speculate that Gekido GBC was never published for some reasons.

Gekido for the PSP was also in development but never released.

Hyouryuu Shounen Keith [GB – Cancelled]

Hyouryuu Shounen Keith (Castaway Boy Keith) is a cancelled action RPG that was in development in 1990 by Epic / Sony for the original GameBoy. The project looked a lot like Zelda: Link’s Awakening, but Keith was in the works 3 years before Nintendo’s title. The game’s plot was also similar to Link’s Awakening, as Keith sank on a small island called Harrods Is, where he had to  complete dungeons and find musical notes to defeat the final boss.

In november 2009 Chris Covell was able to scan an article about Keith from an old Famitsu magazine and you can find more info and images at his website.

Ragnarok [GameBoy – Cancelled]

Ragnarok is a cancelled RPG that was in development in 1994 by Imagitec Design for the original Gameboy. This project should not be confused with the Ragnarok Online MMORPG created by GRAVITY, but it’s possible that the scenario of the GameBoy title could have been related to “King’s Table: Legend of Ragnarok”, a fantasy chess game developed by Imagitec for PC in 1993. Only a single screenshot of Ragnarok GameBoy was published in Total Issue magazine 25, but the game was never released.

Thanks to Pentarou Zero for uploading the scan and to Whitestrider for the link!

Gremlins 2: The New Batch [GameBoy – Beta]

Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a Game Boy side scrolling platform game based on the film with the same name and released in 1990 by Sunsoft. TheActionGameMaster noticed a small beta difference in an old screenshot, found in a magazine. You can see that the life counter is at 5 lives. This is not possible in the final version, because there are only two chances at extra men in the game, and Gizmo begins each continue with 2 men.
