EA Sports Supercross 2002 was cancelled shortly after a demo was shown at E3 2001 and eventually became the EA Sports BIG game ‘Freekstyle’. The development team noticed players preferring to perform tricks rather than race. Players also particularly enjoyed jumping over a two-story house in the demo level, which prompted the developers to scrap the realism in favour of an over-the-top racing game with outlandish freestyle tricks, comparable to the SSX series.
