Faith and a .45 [Cancelled – Xbox 360, PS3]

Faith and a .45 is a cancelled action game that was in development by Deadline Games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The story would have follow a couple named Luke and Ruby, two outlaws during the Great Depression. This idea evolved from a tech demo about a “Bonnie & Clyde” couple, inspired from the real-life couple of outlaws, robbers and criminals who, with their gang, travelled the Central United States during the 1930s.

The game was going to follow their lovely escape (Deadline called Faith and a .45 a “gritty, emotional shooter”) and the gameplay should have been similar to a cover-based third-person shooter (as Gears of War or Army of Two) in particular with the dual-character dynamic, with online and offline co-op. [Info from Wikipedia]

Sadly they were not able to find a publisher interested in the project and on May 2009, Deadline Games filed for bankruptcy. Faith and a .45 vanished forever with the closure of the studio.

As noted by NeXuSDK on the NeoGAF forum, Deadline Games had a lot of troubles selling the game concept to publishers:

Initially, Faith and a .45 was set in a post-apocalyptic setting ala Fallout, which publishers didn’t see value… now look at Fallout. Then they changed the theme to something Bonnie & Clyde inspired, set in the era of the great depression and still developers could not see the potential.

An intense and atmospheric shooter, Faith and a .45 features a heavy focus on characters, co-operative gameplay, road movie storytelling, and cinematic aesthetics. Faith and a .45 tells the story of Luke and Ruby — two outlaw lovers destined to go down in history. The duo battles an oppressive enemy force, led by a ruthless, corrupt oilman who’s out for their blood. Set in an original take on the Great Depression, one of the darkest periods in US history, the game is a gritty, cross-country epic — a road journey with guns, a dark army of steel-plated vehicles, and armor-clad pyromaniacs.

    Sadly cancelled

Faith and a .45 is an action game with full action, developed by Deadline Games. Famous for their projects like Watchmen: The End Is Nigh and Total Overdose. Release dates are still to be announced by the Developers. The game features an awesome gameplay and interesting story. According to the current status of the game is on a hold because of the inability of the developers to find a publisher for the game. It will be released under genre of Action in single player and co-operative mode.

Game is set in the great depression, North America. Main protagonist of the game are two outlaws Luke and Ruby. There motive is to rob banks on the west cost of America. A wicked oilman wants both of them dead. Basically the gameplay of the game is similar to the gameplay of Army of Two and Gears of War. It’s a third person shooter with dual player gameplay. Gameplay of Faith and a .45 mainly focus on gunplay, co-op mechanics and taking cover. According to the developers these features of the gameplay will pace the game up. All the elements of the game seems to make game more cinematic. The boss fights will be same as going against a setup of lot of enemies or fighting against a World War tank. There will be lot of gunbattle and struggling. There will be an option of upgrading your weapons, but for upgrading your weapons you must have to complete puzzles, and search the environment around you for hidden weapons.
The game is set in great depression and is modeled like road movie genre. What is there in the game that will attract gamers is a distinctive feature, which clearly indicates a good relationship between hero Luke and his love interest Ruby. When playing on the single player mode players will take the control of Luke and Ruby will serve as the second member of the squad. When you are playing in the co-op mode second player will play as Ruby. In the single player mode you will take the control of the squad. However, it was commented by the developers that the game would have some features, which will surprise those who are expecting the game to be a normal. The two characters will show affection for each other as you play. For example in one scene it was seen that Ruby is providing cover fire for Luke in gunfight. Once they are finished and clear the area Ruby gave him a kiss as a reward.

There will be dual story mode, as the both of them will work together. Both Luke and Ruby will work together to complete missions, this is not just about giving Luke cover fire while he is running to the side of flank enemies. There will be more complex team work, as in one scene Luke grabs a gasoline can and then toss it up over the enemies and Ruby pulls out her rifle and ignite it oven the herd of enemies. A fast and clean way to clear the enemies. There will be more such multiple co-operative moves, which will not only give the game a cinematic touch, but also implies the two player story setting. It seems like main focus of the developers is on making the game more cinematic and the two player story mode. One more scene that should be included here is when Luke toss a sniper rifle to Ruby and she shots the camera will follow the bullet. Only question that arises over here why Publishers are not interested in such an innovative and different game with wonderful cinematic gameplay.

A little over a week ago, we talked about Faith and a .45, a game notable for its awesome title, interesting backdrop and the fact that it was being made by Total Overdose developer Deadline Games. Now there are some new gameplay details, mostly regarding the focus on co-op and the rather close bond that you will be able to share with your partner.

After an intense shootout, main characters Ruby and Luke will apparently celebrate survival with a kiss. More importantly, Ruby can also apply a kiss of life to Luke if he’s out for the count. Now, in a single player mode with an AI-controlled Ruby, that’s interesting. If played over say, Xbox Live with an online friend, however, I can’t help but feel this is going to lead to hilarity, not to mention a fair few of online gaming’s famous homophobes finally getting together to explore those latent feelings they’ve been having.

The developers are working hard to create a partner that the player really cares about, inspired by the fact that in Gears of War, you don’t really give much of a stuff about your squad. In Faith and a .45, you will really get to work together, and Deadline is promising some real co-operative gameplay, such as being able to toss a gas can in the air for Ruby to shoot and explode. Here’s what Deadline had to say about the game’s plans:

We have a design rule to make sure that Ruby is really interesting and easy to play with. What we call it is ‘To play around with an unscripted A.I. you care for’ — that’s the line that we use internally. That means Ruby should be able to take the initiative on her own, not just react or be scripted to exactly what she has to do… That came mostly from playing some of the other co-op games — say a game like Gears of War, where you have a character with you most of the time, but you don’t really depend on him and it’s kind of like whenever he goes down, you fight on, and then he wakes up again after the battle is over. There’s no real connection.

So, we’re looking at Gears of War but with ranch-hands and kissing. Here’s hoping that Faith and a .45 succeeds where Kane & Lynch failed and we finally have a decent buddy game on our hands. I am looking forward to good things here.
