Turrican 3D [PC – Cancelled]

Turrican 3D [PC – Cancelled]

Turrican is a 1990 video game programmed by Manfred Trenz. It was first developed for the Commodore 64 by Rainbow Arts, but was ported to other systems later. Turrican 3D was intended to bring Turrican into the third dimension in 1999, but it was never released because publisher THQ stopped the development. Screenshots and videos show how the world of Turrican would have looked. In an interview, Manfred Trenz (co-developer of Turrican 3D), stated that many members of the project were far too profit-oriented, and the project failed as a result. [Info from Wikipedia]

More Turrican series stuff, via http://hg101.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=games&action=display&thread=7397

‘On a final note about Super Turrican, if you look at the Enemy Gallery in the game manual that can be brought up by pushing the home button on the Wii-Remote, there are several nasty critters in there that you won’t find in this official retail version of Super Turrican due to memory constraints. We were told to deliver the game in 4 Mbit (512 KByte), the smallest size cartridge available at the time, after finishing it as a 6 MBit title. Not only did we have to cut bits of art in several places, but also a full stage and a feature of the new Beam weapon: Not only could it freeze enemies, but also melt frozen ones, something that the player had to discover in the Ice World and that led into a stage set on a Robot Transport hurtling through the clouds. But it wouldn’t fit – and thus, somewhere, on a forgotten floppy disk, there still might exist the original Super Turrican – Director’s Cut.’

‘Mega Turrican started out in the fall of 1991 as Turrican III on the Amiga computer, but nothing more than a working prototype of the new “plasma rope” feature and some graphics of the first world were completed before the project was moved to the Genesis/Mega Drive… Our last encounter with the Amiga eventually became Turrican 3, which was a port of Mega Turrican that ironically came out before the original.’

I’ve seen a select part of an interview with Manfred Trenz where the question of why Turrican 3D was canned and he puts it down to the guys doing the 3D wanting big money and not really caring about quality of the game and warns people not to ask for any more detail than that.

But if project is only going to be ‘in name only’ and people involved just thinking of the money…i’m of view better it never arrived if it could’nt do the orginals justice.
