Ghost Rider [PSX – Cancelled]

Ghost Rider [PSX – Cancelled]

Ghost Rider is a cancelled side scroller action game based on the comic series of the same name, that was in development in 1995 by Neversoft Entertainment and it would have been published by Crystal Dynamics for the original Playstation. 15 levels were planned, but the game did not even reach the alpha stage. As we can read on the Playstation Museum:

A demo was created to showcase the 3D environment engine, lighting effects, algorithmically generated fire routine, algorithmically generated chain mechanic, and the developer’s ability to capture the mood and feel of the licensed character. […] While it is true that Crystal Dynamics did reorganize, someone within the organization tried to save Ghost Rider and pitched a plan and budget to senior staff. According to an unnamed source, it was turned down as they thought it would have to be true 3D to succeed (ala Gex 3D).

Too bad it never was released. I play Ghost Rider for GBA, it was good though some levels were crazy. But I liked it!

I was lucky enough to interview the coder of said game, Mick West and here’s what he had to say on the game and other Lost Projects of his:

‘There was a Ghost Rider game, which was kind of
like a Castlevania game. It got canceled as Crystal Dynamics were
going through some re-organization. I can’t say we had time to mourn it,
as we immediately went into overdrive writing demos, trying to get work
elsewhere. We did an futuristic racing game, a rally race game, a golf
game, and a mech 3rd person shooter called “Big Guns”, which we eventually
got Sony to let us do, and at about the same time landed the MDK gig. Big
Guns was a fun game, but it kind of got designed out of existence by the
Sony Producer, and eventually was cancelled. That’s a shame’
