Shantae 2: Risky Revolution [GBA – Cancelled]

Shantae 2: Risky Revolution [GBA – Cancelled]

A Shantae sequel was planned for the Game Boy Advance, and screens resembled a port with updated graphics. However, all news of the game stopped and nothing became of it. It is assumed to have been cancelled. As with the original game, Shantae Advance was developed by creator Matt Bozon on his own time. This may be part of the reason for its cancellation, as without an official corporate backing, finding a publisher would be prohibitively difficult. A DS and/or PSP game may be released in the future. – [info from Wikipedia]

Another Shantae project was originally in development for the Nintendo DS in 2006, but it was later canned for some reasons. You can check our page for Shantae DS 2006 for more info and screens! In 2009, a new Shantae was announced for the DSiWare and probably it uses some of the concepts from the unreleased GBA and DS 2006 projects.

Beyond Risky Revolution, there were other prototypes that didn’t get made into full games either, a lot of those being 3D games. “We had a polygonal Shantae that could be run around in three distinct gameplay ‘gyms’,”
“One was a spline-scroller (like Namco’s Klonoa), one was a free-range 3D like Mario 64, and the last was an isometric 3D platformer. We’ve done a lot of exploration in this area… Shantae was a sprite/3D hybrid for PlayStation and PC, and was free-roaming on the PlayStation 2.”

The first world of the game was playable, and late last year (2013), WayForward actually showed it off on a livestream for the first time. You can view this in the video embedded above.

Shantae Advance, also known as Shantae 2: Risky Revolution, was to be a sequel of Shantae for the Game Boy Advance. It was never completed but some of the graphics and ideas were retouched and recycled for Shantae: Risky’s Revenge.

I have a cheery-looking product info sheet, a wallpaper, twelve screenshots, concepts and artworks.

    Oh and this:

    PRESS RELEASE
Simply Gaming PR are proud to announce at Shantae GBA is in development and is looking for a publisher

    Publisher: TBA
    Developer: WayForward Technologies
    Format: GBA
    Release Date: TBA

    Intro

Shantae’s back in Shantae Advance, an epic adventure quest game for the Gameboy Advance, now in development by WayForward Technologies. The nefarious lady-pirate Risky Boots has rigged a subterranean carousel beneath Sequin Land, and is ready to screw things up for good. Shantae must learn more hair-whip attacks, belly dances, creature transformations, and magical moves than ever before if she hopes to defeat Risky and her host of evil minions! It’s up to everyone’s favourite genie girl to save the day!

    Story

Have you ever heard of Sequin Land? It was once a magical place protected from monsters and mishaps by beautiful Guardian Genies. Their heroism won long years of peace, during which many of the genies fell in love with mortal men. The resulting offspring were all girls, seemingly human but with a trace of magical power, often lying dormant or manifesting in unusual ways. Thus half-genies came into the world.

Sadly, as the ages passed large numbers of Guardian Genies began to disappear from Sequin Land until not one remained. Many folks imagined that they had been captured inside bottles, while others believed that the genies had returned to their own realm. With the guardians gone, Sequin Land began to fall prey to evil.

In spite of their lack of skills, the daughters of the Genies made a decision to pool their powers and stand against evil as best they could. Few and far between, these half-genies travelled the land, each choosing a kingdom to guard until peace could be won again. As they struggle to keep the peace, new villains emerge and ancient foes return to wreak havoc on Sequin Land. Is this newest generation of Guardian Genies up to the challenge?
