C-2: Judgement Clay, also known as Clay Fighter 2, is Interplay’s 1994 sequel to ClayFighter. This game was not as well received as its predecessor. Lucy, a gorilla, was originally planned to be a playable character in the game but was removed from the final version. Because Tiny’s sprite was reused from the first ClayFighter, [...]
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Reverie is an RPG developed by Heartbeat and published by Enix for the Super Famicom in December 1995, only in Japan. From a beta screenshot published in a magazine, we can notice that the hero’s air looked different from the final ones.

JB2 is the unreleased sequel of Jelly boy,a platform known in west as Smart Ball. Like the prequel, the game’s main character is a jelly, but this time (after killing the boss who captured them) we can use his friends too, each one with his unique ability. Jelly Boy 2 was finished, but never [...]
The Secret of Zinj is an unreleased tie-in of the movie Congo. The game features many different gameplay styles, running the gamut from shooting enemies in first person à la Operation Wolf to canoeing. The problem is, they are all badly designed and very frustranting, in part because the graphic engine seems unfinished. The game [...]
Development on EarthBound took place as a joint effort between Ape, Inc. and HAL Laboratory, Inc. and was designed by Shigesato Itoi. The total development time for the project was five years, much longer than was initially expected. The first design concepts for the HP boxes were to make them like pachinko balls and have [...]
Kid Kirby was meant to be a “prequel” of the serie, a platform game with a younger Kirby (with hair?) that was in development at DMA Design, the makers of Uniracers, Silicon Valley and Lemmings. A little image from this game was already seen in an old magazine, but only recently we found more concepts [...]

GoldS has found an unused icon in Kirby’s Dream Course: “This icon was probably supposed to be used for the Mix “ability” in the game, which gives you a random ability from an ability roulette. The icon is never used in the game. There IS a Mix enemy in the 2P mode, but this graphic [...]
GoldS has found another interesting unused object in the Mega Man X series: this time a weird enemy with seven orb, that was hidden in the MMX2 code. This object has HP and can be destroyed. The anchor sphere is the first to be destroyed, followed by the connecting spheres.

Although it seems to start out as something completely different, this is a promotional video for Earthworm Jim, mostly focusing on the Mega Drive version. As well as some insight into the design process of the game, it shows a lot of footage from an earlier version of the game. Unfortunately, the way the video [...]
Corn Buster is an unreleased Super Nintendo game developed by Engine Software. The game is the story of a dragon named Globey, who sets out to defeat the person who’s stolen all the cornflakes in the world. That particular section in the Super Famicom article explains the graphical [...]
The images on this page are taken from the Beta of Zelda 3, during the second half of 1991, a few months before its official release. The differences from the final version are in fact very small, but very interesting. Nintendo first changed the HEAD-UP DISPLAY of the game: the bar of the magic had [...]
Looking into the coding of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars reveals several unused enemies (most of which seem to be unused sub-species), including a notorious one known as the Drill Bit. In fact, Drill Bit appears in the game, but does not fight in any battle like a normal enemy.
Material from an [...]

It’s not all that uncommon that a game takes a slight change in direction. If games didn’t end up different from beta to final release, Unseen 64 would be out of a job! Something gets cut out due to money and/or time constraints: Yoshi’s Island is no different. Although having a very unique development history [...]
A few months prior to Chrono Trigger’s market release, a beta version was given to magazine reviewers and game stores. An unfinished build of the game, it contains numerous differences from the final version, such as unused music tracks and a location called “Singing Mountain”. Curious fans later explored the [...]

Before Battletoads, there was Wrestlerage; on the SNES, at least. This 1991 side-viewed grapple-fest aimed to capitalise on the success of the two NES wrestling titles previously produced by Rare, but also to break away from the restrictive ring-based play of the licensed games by taking the action out into the streets / parks / [...]
