LukA_YJK has posted a message in our forum to find more people interested in the release of the Rogue Squadron 3D Level Editor, to try to collect enough signatures to impress LucasArts and Factor 5 for a chance that they could share the Level Editor with the fans. We dont know it this could be useful, but we’d like to help: you can check and sign the petition in here. Good luck!

Dear LucasArts and Factor 5,

We are a group of enthusiastic fans of your great PC platform computer game, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D. For more than ten years this game, which became a Star Wars arcade game classics, was a source of inspiration for many and many Star Wars fans. But unlike some other Star Wars games there is not any tool available which would let fan community to expand the game by developing additional levels and modifications.

As it is known Factor5 used its in-house level editor L3D to design game levels for Rogue Squadron and Rogue Leader. In fact this tool is not used anymore for any other games because it is out-of-date by now.

Therefore we ask you to release freely the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D level editor. It would allow us to use our creativity to revive the game and expand it with fantastic add-ons. The editor would also serve as a new item in the arsenal of all those enthusiastic fans of Star Wars games.

We are very much looking forward for your kind and helpful decision

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Many thanks you for supporting the Petition, monokoma. Although many are sceptic about petitions in general and those addressing LucasArts in particular, I am really optimistic about our initiative. With the news about Factor 5 shutting down this might be our last chance, so… Join us! We need you now!

If this is true, can you please repost it on a day that is NOT April Fool’s Day?

I’d like to see this happen — again, if it’s true.

It’s not really funny enough to be a joke …

Don’t think Luka knew it was April 1st today. This is real…

The truth is that this petition has been started. Another truth is that we have got only 17 signatures so far. Thanks to everybody who contributed. But it is not so much, I would say.
So, please spread the word and invite your friends to sign the petition. Once we get a considerable number we could send it to LucasArts and Factor 5 contacts.

The petition asking LucasArts and Factor 5 to make the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D level editor available to the fan community has been started in March. More than 100 people, mostly expressing their interest in being involved in developing new levels, signed it. There were a former Rogue Squadron development team member and an author of a sci-fi book, many enthusiastic gamers, experienced modders and computer science students. Unfortunately after sending emails to LucasArts and former Factor 5 management twice we did not get any response.

Still determined to continue with the petition, it seems that we will not be able to get the level editor soon. So here is a call for joining forces to develop Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D Editor, call for forming the Team to all interested modders, amateur level designers, computer science students and everybody who can contribute. If you are interested in taking this challenge please post a comment. Let us do it ourselves!

Factor 5 had some financial problems lately, some of the staffers were fired. I think that the new name of the studio is now WhiteHarvest.

Thanks to everybody for supporting the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D Editor Request petition. We have got 116 signatures already. If you want to further support our petition please place this image (http://media.moddb.com/images/articles/1/43/42680/petition-luke-300×300.jpg) at your website and link it to http://www.petitiononline.com/swrs3d/

Another news is that recently I was in contact with a game developer from White Harvest regarding our Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D Editor Request petition. Here is what that person said about Rogue Squadron: “…LucasArts owns all rights, assets and tools to all Rogue Squadron games, and are the only ones who can authorize this. I’m glad that you’re still enjoying the old Rogue Squadron,… but I doubt that anybody will ever release the tools. It’s actually quite a bit of work, and the interest isn’t big enough (not unless the number of petitioners reaches 5 or 6 digits). Regardless, the request would most likely have to go through LEC.”
