In the Youtube channel of FF8demo there are a couple of videos that show unused scenes from FF8. In the descriptions we can read that: “Some stuff was never used in the final version of the game. This was taken from the “Final Fantasy VIII Preview Disc” that came with FF7.”

Some of the differences that you can find in these videos are:

  • Rinoa in the Dollet mission
  • music which isn’t in the final game
  • the first part on the sea, is different from the final introducion (they had yet to implement the various sentences)
  • during the Dollet mission, Squall, Zell, and (in the final version) Selphie wear their school uniforms, not their casual uniforms
  • even the FMV in the second one had to be redone to change the outfits and take out Rinoa.
  • Leviathan isn’t avalible at that point.
  • the person who shoots the oncoming robot is different
  • It’s not Selphie who acts as messenger

Thanks a lot to Robert Seddon and JargonJohn for these infos!

The footage in the lower video is used in the playable demo bundled with Brave Fencer Musashiden, where you have Rinoa in the Dollet mission and other differences from the ‘real’ version. (Compare the FFVII demos with Aeris or Tifa in the first bombing mission.) The interesting thing about that video is the music, which isn’t in the final game (I don’t think it’s even in the playable demo) and isn’t the unused version of The Landing either. Here’s a version with the music left in: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=E5U7UtRMf9U

Which bits in the top one are supposed to be unused?

i don’t understand the first video.. it is a montage of various fmv scenes, or it was the opening in the beta ?

even if it is just a montage, the first part, on the sea, is different from the final introducion (they had yet to implement the various sentences)

Another difference from the second video (the demo) to the final version is that, during the Dollet mission, Squall, Zell, and (in the final version) Selphie wear their school uniforms, not their casual uniforms.

Which means even the FMV in the second one had to be redone to change the outfits and take out Rinoa.

Also, Leviathan isn’t avalible at that point.

And this demo was also included in an issue of OPM.

And the person who shoots the oncoming robot is different, and it’s not Selphie who acts as messenger in the demo… (For that matter, the demo has somewhat different debug rooms too.)

I remember asking about this on Betarchive once, because it’s an unusual case: as far as we know, it’s more like a ‘special version’ of the Dollet mission than one Square changed their minds about.

I’ve an old EDGE magazine with some screen shots in and info that furthers show differences between the final game and the earlier beta versions. If I can get a Decent Scanner I’ll upload them for all to see. The pictures are very small so I’m not sure how well they’ll come out but I’ll see what I can do.
